white women of hollywood, reducing japan and japanese culture to cupcakes, sexy ”costumes” and submissive sex-kittens since god knows when
I hate gwen stefani and all this shit with a passion, but the sad truth is that the Japanese already do this to themselves, and sometimes worse, so I’m not sure how mad it’s worth getting in the end. *sigh* :/
It’s like this: Uninformed artists use Japanese culture in a cliche manner -> Uninformed audience gets mad -> Uninformed audience spreads even more misinformation without doing the research. Even though their hearts are in the right place, they’re still misinformed. Those back-up dancers would be doing the exact same stupid shit in Japan as they are in the States. That doesn’t make it any easier for Japanese-Americans to deal with, but if you look at it in a direct US-Japan context, the Japanese do a lot worse to themselves.
AKB48 is my recent favorite example of Japanese bullshit that is shady as fuck. Taking young girls all under the age of 18 and at least 14 (possibly younger), and parading them around in very tiny outfits in front of an audience composed of almost exclusively grown men a couple times a day in Tokyo and other cities in Japan. A video I accidentally saw recently had these girls in LINGERIE. They are UNDER 18. Japan culturally encourages border-line pedophilia. Then there’s Kyari Pamyu who said she intentionally goes out of her way to use weird shit in videos, etc., just to get international attention- she is actively propagating stupid crazy cliche shit for popularity. This stuff gets disseminated into the world where Japanese is a rare language to understand, and then you get idiot artists like the above who see that crap, don’t bother to research it, and fall into the trap of copying that same intentionally attention-seeking/morally shady shit. It’s almost comical. It is almost certainly worth ignoring as stupid and not worth the effort. The public, not understanding the context of all this (and which I’ve only very slightly touched on here), looks at it through mostly an American/Western moral view, which is not the same as Japan or other parts of the world.
This post has officially derailed- my point is that Japan does this same cliche crap at home, encourages it abroad, stupid artists who don’t do their research and who don’t know the trap they’re falling into copy it, US/english speaking public who applies a western moral attitude to it and who also does not do their research start yelling even more misinformation, and we get this. The whole thing is stupid. People who fall into the trap should just be ignored and the mad people should read more into what Japanese popular culture actually is IN Japan. I honestly don’t think there’s anything the west can do to it that they haven’t already done worse themselves in Japan.
Sorry for the mini-soapbox. It’s just a stupid troll to feed your goats to as nobody at all involved knows what they’re doing it.
P.S.: The worst part is that I’ve had several girls tell me their favorite artist is Gwen Stefani or that they like her, thanks to her stupid harajuku shit (harajuku is such a worthless part of town, btw- about a million places better to go to in Tokyo). I find it hard to get super mad at that crap anymore when even the home country of the culture in question seems alright with it.
